Johannesburg - A Johannesburg Metro policeman was shot and seriously wounded on Thursday when he and his partner surprised a gang of five robbers holding up a fast food outlet.
Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Conel Mackay said the incident happened at 19:55 when the policemen entered a Wimpy in Midrand for a meal.
The robbers panicked when they saw the policemen and opened fire, hitting one in the hip. He was taken to hospital where he was reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
His partner was not hit, but was in shock.
The robbers fled, dropping a firearm inside the restaurant and ran to a nearby Caltex service station where they hijacked a vehicle in the forecourt.
The vehicle's owner was shot in the stomach. He was later reported to be in a critical condition at a local hospital.
Mackay said a description of the vehicle was being circulated and would be made public once verified.
