East London - Hentie Maartens, a 32-year-old former Springbok scrumhalf was arrested and charged with allegedly driving under the influence of liquor after he was involved in a vehicle collision in East London at the weekend.
Maartens is alleged to have jumped a stop street at the Fitzpatrick and Fleet Streets intersection about 03:00 on Saturday.
The vehicle he was driving, a Subaru valued at about R300 000 and sponsored by a local motor dealer, crashed into a Toyota Corolla with three occupants.
Both cars were substantially damaged, but there were no reported injuries.
Members of the local Flying Squad arrived on the scene detected that player - apparently alone - was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and he was arrested.
A blood sample was drawn at Frere Hospital and Maartens was detained at the Fleet Street police station on charges of drunken, reckless and negligent driving.
He was released on bail of R500 and warned to appear in a local court on Monday.
Maartens who currently plays for the Border Bulldogs, is a former Natal Sharks and Free State Cheetahs player.
