Johannesburg - Metro police have called for reinforcements on the Golden Highway, near Soweto, where Orange Farm residents have been burning tyres and barricading the road.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said more metro police had been called in to contain the situation.
"More people are advancing to the road and we have had to call in reinforcements to the area," he said.
Orange Farm residents have been protesting over poor service delivery.
Last week, 10 Orange Farm residents were injured and 20 were arrested for public violence during a protest.
Minnaar has advised motorists to avoid the Golden Highway and to use the N1 instead.
