Waved old SA flag 'for unity'

2007-01-22 23:32

Cobus Claassen

Johannesburg - Tshepo Legodi, who set tongues wagging when he proudly wore the old South African flag to support the Springboks at Twickenham last November, says he did it "for unity".

But, he wasn't even aware until recently that his action had caused a bit of a rumpus.

The large number of old South African flags that were displayed at the two Bok tests in London against England, on November 18 and 25, was hotly debated locally.

A group of supporters at the ground swore at Bok captain John Smit when he refused to sign his name on the old flag.

A reader's photo of a black man supporting the Boks with an old flag draped around his shoulders, caused a bit of a sensation.

Surprised to see photo

Legodi, 26, who hails from Pretoria and has been working in London for the past seven years, told Die Burger that he only realised recently that a photo of him with the flag had appeared in South Africa.

"A friend came to visit in December and he brought along a newspaper with the photo in it.

"I was very surprised when I saw the photo and the report."

Legodi said he decided to display the old flag to show that he accepted what happened in the past, and had moved on.

"You could say that I did it for unity.

"I don't carry a chip (on his shoulder) and I don't dwell on the past.

"I think that if people reach a point where they can accept the past, it will no longer be able to cause hurt.

"The apartheid years were bad, but I'm not going to pretend it never happened.

"The old flag is part of my history, too. What are we going to tell our grandchildren one day?

"I'd like to be able to show them that I've moved on."

Legodi, a business consultant, said he visited his parents in Polokwane every year, and will always be a "proud South African".

He thought most of the Bok supporters were surprised to see him with the old flag at Twickenham.

"I think most of them saw the humour in it. And, why not? I think South Africans should take care not to be overly sensitive.

Had both flags there

"The old flag, in its day, represented the entire South Africa and not everyone was racist, by any means.

"They were proud South Africans, who are now just as proud of their new flag."

Will he take his old South African flag along to Twickenham again?

"Yes. I actually had both flags there. A black man with the old flag and the new flag - what better symbol of unity can there be?"

- Beeld

Somebody please give this dude a medal! With a mindset like that, this country has potential to rule the world.

I take my hat off to Tshepo Legodi, that is the kind of attitude that can take South Africa a long way. If only it could rub off on the rest of the nation.

APPLAUSE!!!!!!!!!! As a young South African I think Legodi expressed my sentiments exactly! We cannot hide the past, whilst embracing the future. And like he said not ALL the things in the past was bad and ugly. Thank you Legodi for taking such a balanced approach. I think you speak for SO many young South Africans who would like to move on into our bright future without having to tiptoe over the past as if it never existed! APPLAUSE!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to tip my hat for Tshepo. What an amazing attitude. He is absolutely correct in all respects when he says that South africans should take care not to be overly sensitive. Would it not be amazing if this attitude could rub off on more South Africans, especially those in government! Way to go Tshepo!

At last, a 21st century South African. Legodi for president!

To say the old and the new flag represent unity is arrogant & ignorant. The memories of the flag will forever remind most of us about the inhumane nature in which the apartheid regime sought to destroy the current divesify nation currently represented by the new flag and its generation. For Tshepo to embrace such with pride shows how birds of the same feathers flock together around the globe or here at home. For him being a Proud SA, he should at least spare a thought for some of us if he moved.

I realy hope this opens all the shut eyes in our country, to realize there will always be a past to our country!

I do not support the waving of the old flag or that John Smit was asked to sign one, but I can say it is rare read of a young black man without a chip on their shoulder habouring on the past and this tells me there is a future I would plea with this man to come back to RSA and pass this positivity onto his fellow community.

Well done!! I just wish more South Africans will adopt this type of attitude, the past is history, acknowledge that fact, and move on! I satute you SIR!!!

Now if only the members OF OUR GOVERNMENT can have the same way of thinking what a BEAUTIFUL country this would be

Joe Stolley 1/23/2007 8:43:12 AM
Tshepo Legodi - if you are ever in Durban, please let me buy you a beer. I think you are one up on most of us.

As a person who grew up in 60's & 70's, there is no way that flag would symbolise unity, that's the same flag that remind us of the pain and struggle we went through, the same flag that remind me of my older sister who was killed because she was stuck in town at night,it reminds of a President who stood tall with hatred telling me I'm not worth being called a human being, don't get me wrong, I moved on but in no way could that flag represent unity.

Wow, what a very, very cool story. I truelly respect, and agree with his point of view. The old flag is a symbol of repression, but also it was what made us proud when we competed (not so regularly) against international nations.

I am pleasantly surprised by this young gentelman's approach towards such a "sensitive" issue. He is 100% correct in his reasoning to ask;"what are we going to tell our grandchildren". Also, the flag and apartheid were part of our history but we must move on.
