Johannesburg - Two men drowned at beaches along the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, paramedics said.
The first man, a 44-year-old, drowned when a wave hit him and washed him into the sea as he was fishing off the rocks on Glenmore beach, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.
The man's 16-year-old son then tried to save him but ended up having to be rescued by lifeguards.
"Lifeguards managed to pull both of them out of the water.
"Paramedics tried to resuscitate the father but sadly he died. The boy, however, was treated on scene and then taken to the Netcare Margate for further treatment," Botha said.
The second man drowned three hours later after going for a swim at the Caribbean Estates beach outside Port Edward.
"The man got into trouble while swimming at around 13:00."
Because of the time he had been in the water all resuscitation attempts failed and he was declared dead on the scene.
