Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed by hijackers in the driveway of his home in Bedworth Park near Vereeniging, Gauteng police said on Saturday.
Captain Shado Mashobane said the man was sitting inside his silver Mercedes Benz (registration RFM 729 GP) around 18:30 on Friday when he was approached by two men armed with pistols.
"The hijackers ordered the man to get out of his vehicle, he refused. An argument started between the hijackers and the man," said Mashobane.
A neighbour saw the incident and came to assist the Mercedes driver but was shot in his lower left body by one of the hijackers.
He said, "The neighbour ran to safety and soon afterwards heard a shot The two hijackers then fled in the man's Mercedes".
The owner of the vehicle was shot in his upper body, said Mashobane.
Emergency services took the two wounded men to the Medi City clinic in Vereeniging where the owner of the Mercedes died on arrival.
"The man's neighbour was in a stable condition in the clinic," said Mashobane.
No arrests had been made. Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.
Police urged community members not to try to perform a citizen's arrest as the men were armed and dangerous. "Members of the community should rather call police if they notice the two men," Mashobane said.
