Skierlik shooter gets 169 years

Johannesburg - Skierlik shooter Johann Nel was sentenced to 169 years in jail, the SABC reported on Friday.

The sentence includes four life terms.

The 19-year-old earlier this week pleaded guilty in the Mmabatho High Court in Mafikeng to killing four people and wounding several others in a January 14 shooting spree.

The attack, believed to have been racially motivated, was carried out in the Skierlik informal settlement near Swartruggens in the North West.

As an earthling I felt sick the day this monster murdered innocent people and I felt ashamed to have skin the same colour as his. Justice has been done. Now throw away the key to his cell so the rest of us can try to get along in peace.

A white guy killing black people is wrong. Why do "robbers" not get a mention of black killing white? I was robbed and was told "It's because you are white" Killing is wrong. How is this guy's sentence so much worse than those of "robbers"?

It will not bring back this poor lives but it sends a clear message to all racists, black, white, pink and yellow that crime does not pay. Johan Nel will be remembered for his people slaughter for many years to come. I pray that he gets the best rehab programmes to come back a new man if he can be given parole. too young for him to spend the rest of his life in jail, I believe there is still hope. Pity the Judge had to send a message

Skin colour has nothing to do with it. The crime is ghastly, the sentence justified. His parents have a huge responsibility in this, but it was his decision to do what he did. His sentence must be an example to all.

Good to know that people are still being put behind bars but what about all the farm murderers or does killing white people not count as a crime in the new SA

I think 169 years is a crime in itself.....He needs to be helped....And by putting him in jail will DESTROY him............Look @ his life and what he has had to endure......I think his Mother & Father should serve the time......As they helped him get to were he is.........I am praying for you Nel.............

The sentencing of this young boy is a good thing. It sends a message that barbaric action will not be tolerated no matter who you are and no matter what the race. It must be commendable for it removes the habouring suspecions of light sentencing in racially sensitive cases.

he deserves more than 169 years cause those people he killed won't come back again but he will be enjoying tax payers money in jail cause i believe inmates they even eat jelly and sweets on sundays also like us where they don't even care about food prices that are going up almost every month so please rethink about this sentence it must go up like food prices.

Although I do not agree with what this young man did and agree whole heartedly with his sentence, I can't help pittying the boy as his life is practically over before it even began. I truely think that his parents should also have to answer for the manner in which they raised him in his formative years! Very sad! Neil - Mpumalanga

As long as it applies to all murderers. Why should we, the tax payers, keep these criminals alive just to pump iron and get fit everyday. These days the jails are more like hotels. They should make them work and get punished for their crimes. Not just relax and eat for free everyday.

Parents, we have a responsibility of teaching our kids to respect life - irrespsctive of the colour. This guy will now rot in jail. I am sure the families of the victims couldn't have asked for more.

I think the judge who presided over the sentencing of this young Afrikaner boy needs to be congradulated for doing his job very well.This should serve as a lesson to such people who are still harbouring racist attitudes in our society that they do not have place in South Africa.South Afric belongs to the people who live in it,black and white.

I believe this is an appropriate sentence and had the death penalty been in place, he should have received that. Even though he is remorseful, one can not allow murderers to get away with what they do. I just hope that people who murder for other reasons, such as robberies and rape and financial gain will be punished with the same sort of sentences. Murder is murder, no matter if it is whether your skin is white, black or if you do it for money or sex. You have taken someone's life. Full stop.

And so a 19 year kid's life ends. So stupid. I can't help but think this sentence is a bit excessive though, in light of recent sentences we have seen for murderers and such.

What Nel did was totaly unforgivable and all peace loving South Africans I'm are fully in agreement that he deserves his sentence. However, why is it that these harsh senteces are reserved for only a few. How many other people are going to be slaughtered by criminals intent on nothing els but murder. Our hearts go out to all who have lost loved ones both black, coloured and white, but it won't end untill the goverment starts taking a very firm stand against crime in this country.

Well he mostly definetly deserves the 169 years sentence and some more. But the real question is, if this was a black person killing a whole lot of whites, would he still get a 169 years or less. I think there our double standards here.

This was a reflection what is happening on the ground in SA. One guy was not emotional up to all killings that happened around him, by "blacks". Course not all blacks but this was his naive reaction. Hope black and white learn someting from this.

It's a pity that the focus of this crimes was because it racial hatred agains black is not acceptable, instead of this beign wrong in principle. We all now that raccism against whites is an exceptable norm. I really doubt if the sentence would have been the same if it was a black man, killing white people. I've never seen any person found guilty of farm killings getting such a harse sentence.

We are not even guarenteed to live 100 years why don't the judge just say "you are jailed for live" instead of playing around with a number of years he won't even reach.

Our leaders set an excellent example for all South Africans,preaching hatered and in public not condemming crime,is the political will really there or is the a means getting even with the past. This child just retaliated against the endless killing of white people in this country. I condem his actions as he inflicted harm on innocent black people, if he did this to a person killing farmers or leaders that make stupid speeches if would have been diffrent

He deserves the guilotine. I applaud the judge for this judgment. I hope other judges would follow suite when it comes to sentencing killers. Killers of blacks, whites, Indians, Asians, coloured etc all deserve such harsh sentences.
