Nelspruit - Police have started beefing up security along routes that will be used frequently during the 2010 Soccer World Cup in Nelspruit.
The Federation of International Football Associations (Fifa) national organising committee has sponsored five new BMW police vehicles to patrol some of the more crime-riddled streets in Nelspruit.
The vehicles started patrolling last week to provide visible policing and reduce crime, said Mpumalanga's crime prevention head, Director Sana Mashiyane.
He said the vehicles would remain on the roads until 2010 and beyond. They will also be used to escort players from their hotels to the stadium.
As part of normal policing, another 40 police vehicles are already patrolling the N4 highway in Mpumalanga.
