New SA passport too late for UK

2009-02-11 08:32

Carina van Wyk

Johannesburg - A South African family of five will now have to pay almost R5 000 more for a holiday in Britain.

The holiday visa, which South Africans will need from March 3, costs R991 (£65). Even if you intend only touching down on British soil while waiting for a connecting flight, you will have to pay R686 (£45) for a transit visa.

The British government on Monday announced that South African holidaymakers would soon need these visas.

South Africans with a stamp in their current passports indicating they have previously travelled to Britain, will be able to travel there without a visa until the end of June.

Passports illegally obtained

A spokesperson for the British High Commission, Apsara McNaught, said the country's biggest concern was that non-South Africans, who were not entitled to SA passports, illegally got hold of legal passports.

The safety of South African identity documents was "a big concern and an unacceptable threat to the United Kingdom's borders with regards to illegal migration and national security".

The standard holiday visa is valid for six months and a person may enter the country more than once with it. Applications are processed within five working days.

The visa is valid only for the UK and not for European countries following the Schengen visa system.

In July last year the UK gave 11 countries six months to address certain concerns. The countries were Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.

Along with Bolivia, Venezuela, Swaziland and Lesotho, South Africa did not meet the requirements.

New passport

Siobhan McCarthy, spokesperson for the South African Department of Home Affairs, said they couldn't comply with the requirements within six months due to, among other reasons, the necessary technology and training.

A new passport, which meets the international civil aviation standards, will be released in March.

- Young people who in the past went to the UK on two-year working holidaymaker visas, will no longer be able to do this, reported Erika Gibson. Only those with qualifications and/or work experience will in future be able to apply for a working visa to be able to work in Britain.

It goes to show that we as ordinary South Africans have to pay the fine for the ANC government being corrupt the way they are.If they only did there jobs in the beginning then we would have not had to fork out more money. The government must now pay for us as holiday makers to visit the UK as it was there mistake

Brian 2/11/2009 8:52:00 AM
Another job well done by our incredible home affairs... Will government PLEASE take their thumbs out of their a$$ and focus on proper service delivery and training. Especially in the Home Affairs dept.

Ben Hawkins 2/11/2009 8:57:54 AM
This is just another example of what is happening in our country. We have people working in departments that only care about their own back pockets and for that little bit of GREED we as a country get penalized. We are now a true 3rd world country, SHAME ON YOU SOUTH AFRICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Danie 2/11/2009 8:58:43 AM
The reasons why the most advanced country in Africa couldn't meet the requirements are according to Siobhan McCarthy, spokesperson for the South African Department of Home Affairs, that they couldn't comply with the requirements within six months due to, among other reasons, the necessary technology and training. But Mauritius, Namibia and Botswana could meet the deadline. How pathetic Dept. of Home Affairs.

AndreS 2/11/2009 8:59:54 AM
That is the only reason the UK did this. No other reason. They may have 100's of excuses but in the end of the day its all about money. If our government is worth anything they would do the same to the UK. We have England playing cricket here next summer and the soccer world cup next year. We can make a killing out of them. They had their subway blown up and some to 9/11 terrorists came from the UK so how weak. They should check out their own citizens and stop worrying about ours.

Blackie 2/11/2009 9:00:10 AM
The government is to blame for this. The UK don't want SA criminals in there country, and SA is the breeding ground for criminals Thanks to the government VIVA CRIME VIVA

Manny Hasselhoff 2/11/2009 9:01:24 AM
Glad I still have my European Passport, No VISA problems for me.

Joanna 2/11/2009 9:01:27 AM
This is yet another 'Proudly South African' moment. So happy I am engaged to a Brit. Sadly, I now want to give up my South African passport.

Ryan 2/11/2009 9:12:18 AM
Joanna, I really hope that you are engaged to your Brit for love and not so that you can become a British citizen.

Ryan 2/11/2009 9:14:50 AM
Well, I'm really glad that I have a European passport. It's my 'get out of jail free' card.

Mis-led 2/11/2009 9:14:51 AM
Two words people - BANANA REPUBLIC

Ivan 2/11/2009 9:15:53 AM
It's cool The Brits are fill of crap as usual. Let's see the evidence of terrorists emanating from SA. The USA has just said the biggest threat to them is BRITISH terrorists. Let's make it reciprocal asap.

Elton 2/11/2009 9:18:36 AM
Come on South Africa this is not the little league, you can get things right especially if you think futuristically instead of act reactionary. Very dissapointed :((

Anon 2/11/2009 9:18:50 AM
VISAS - and once again our new government has proofed itself.

Zwa 2/11/2009 9:20:15 AM
It Sucks to see how we always have to Bow down to The West i agree every person comming to SA should have a Visa and the can R1200 for it. They just waltz in and out of our Country but just try visiting theirs its a problem. Ag ek is kwaad en naar.

Dude 2/11/2009 9:21:01 AM
At the end of the day they loose. Just another destination I will not visit. I can understand the USA, at least they issue a 10 year visa, but this sheghan style limited entry visa, is nothing more than a money making machine. If truth be told, if the concern was security, why do they just not issue a 10 year visa ???? Sometimes the facts reverberate the truth all by itself. 1 + 1 = 2. Anyway I have been to that shitty place, you guys are not missing much its a shit hole to start with !!!

SA citizen 2/11/2009 9:21:58 AM
A round of applause to our wonderful government for yet another successful *!!@# up. And then of course there is the brilliant solution of simply churning out a "new" document to meet the criteria. I guess the criminal / corrupt element that runs the department will of course ensure that the "new" version is only issued to "eligible" passport holders

AndreS 2/11/2009 9:26:31 AM
Stop blaming our government for everything that goes wrong. Yes the are pathetic and cannot do anything right but this time its the Brits wanting money. At £65 per person and 400 000 went last year it works out to £26 000 000. A nice little income for doing nothing. I hope we can get that money back into our country in some way. Even if we had very secure passports they would have found some other excuse. So blame the Brits if you want to blame someone.

GIDEON 2/11/2009 9:28:15 AM
Home Affairs appointed a 26 year old female "disciplined cadre", with no qualifications, as Chief Director for Gauteng a few years ago. These idiotic decisions have consequences!

857 2/11/2009 9:28:49 AM
They dont care about matters at home, why should they give a shit about matters abroad. This is africa people, with the mentality to go along with it.

Johan Theron 2/11/2009 9:30:51 AM
We should charge Uk citizens the same then to visit SA as I believe the threat is bigger coming from over there. Its still pathetic that we could not comply with their requirments. They must be scared that some angry Zim resedents might fly out of SA.

Jay 2/11/2009 9:30:56 AM
This is an utter embarrassment. What will it cost the country, all that money will leave our shores, throw in some lost productive time for time spent in more queues. A disgrace dished out by a mediocracy of the unaccountabe. Let them have it......... csc@dha.gov.za

Bee 2/11/2009 9:32:06 AM
...another 'eish, its brohkeeeen' moment... I am surprised though, I thought they wanted to get rid of the whities...!

Number1 Tsotsi 2/11/2009 9:32:33 AM
Would all the people living in RSA with foreign passports just leave us in peace. Why are here in the first place, you souties!!!!

Dean 2/11/2009 9:32:41 AM
As usual the narrow minded few look at things with blinkers and miss the bigger picture which is part and parcel to do with the Zimbabwe crisis and the influx of illegal aliens into SA. There is nothing wrong with increasing security protocol. Look at the US, same thing but you dont see anyone moaning about it. If you really want to go to the UK, you will make a plan and besides, why would anyone want to go to a country that is in more of a recession than SA, unless working as a cleaner is for u.

Daniel 2/11/2009 9:32:46 AM
I hope this will influence Home Affairs to egt working on what South Africans have known to be a Corrupt and Lazy Department for years. The amount of illegal immigrants in this country from surrounding African countries with legit passports is disgraceful! Britain is turning into a dump as a result and they need to stop other countries mismanagement. Catch a wake up government!

tumza 2/11/2009 9:33:42 AM
The British can all go to hell. I am not visiting their country. Those who have money to play around with be my guest.

JJ 2/11/2009 9:35:30 AM
And I bet you vote ANC, and work for the Government as well.

Vynette 2/11/2009 9:37:33 AM
Hey, at this moment in time who cares about love?!? Any single male Brits out there wanna marry me and get me outa this hell hole?

Not bad? ..it's even worse! 2/11/2009 9:38:14 AM
It is actually worse than just the R1000 for a visa. You need to present yourself in person at a British embassy / consulate. This is a huge additional expense for someone living far from a major city!!

Gary 2/11/2009 9:38:53 AM
It is the greed of the Home Affairs personal who sell passports that has resulted in this. Well done guys, hope you made enough money.

sido 2/11/2009 9:39:54 AM
Dude - wake up man - we cannot afford to not get any tourists here - it is the only sustainable indstury in this country and to now create more barriers will only make things worse - stop B!tching about the poms - What we need is for ALL south africans to start paying their taxes and things will look up much sooner!!!

ahmet 2/11/2009 9:40:05 AM
very sad to see a country going down like this! yes I agree BANANA BANANA oe oe oe!!

Brit Local 2/11/2009 9:40:28 AM
72 - 96 pounds (we are lucky) is what the Brits pay locally for their own passports, blame the falling Rand for the pinch in your pocket! Somebody issue our government with an "idiots guide to politics" Shame

T 2/11/2009 9:41:32 AM
Don't be naive you fool, AndreS. Its the blooming gauvmints fault home affairs is run in such a pathetic fashion. I for one have been waiting 6 months so far for my unabridged birth certificate. It took my wife 7 months to get her ID book replaced after her handbag was stolen. Its just pathetic and its because of stuff like this that I'm on my way out of this place!

Gary 2/11/2009 9:42:05 AM
AndreS, we had 6 months to get the issues sorted out, other countries have done it, yet the monkeys at home affairs can't get their shop in order. The majority of South Africans on a work visa in the UK, just want to work and bring home pounds anyway. Get your facts straight......

Yousoof Savant 2/11/2009 9:42:27 AM
I think it's necessary that the UK has taken such a bold step, however, I think SA should extend the same courtesy to ALL countries that require SA citizens to apply for extortionately expensive visas. We should charge the Brits, the US etc... we can use this money to IMPROVE our security infrastructure. Comeon guys don't be AFRAID to charge...

Christopher 2/11/2009 9:43:41 AM
Yet another nail in the coffin of the ANC - even more reason for everyone to Vote on the 22 April to get rid of these incompetant public servants - fire the minister of Home Affairs immediately for not doing the job asigned to them. If this was a private sector company the CEO would be without work this morning?????

Christo 2/11/2009 9:48:56 AM
I think this is a case of shooting oneself in the foot. Those lovely 2 year work holidays, skiing, European hikes and tours such as in the Med... no longer available to you young ANC supporters...sorry for you... sorry for you

Moelatelo 2/11/2009 9:50:11 AM
We are in this country to help your sorry black ass. But not to worry, we will soon be leaving you and your corrupt Zuma government to rot in hell.

Bunn 2/11/2009 9:51:07 AM
What an indictment for South Africa. Our home affairs suck!! In six months we could not rectify a problem, but Botswana and others could? Once again it is denialism and excuses from Government. Shame on you.

South African 2/11/2009 9:52:08 AM
The Arrogant British can go Screw themselves over and go to hell. i will not visit there rotten dull country. There economy is in the dumps , thay should be encouraging people to come in , but yet those dull greedy bastards want to overcharge us on visas???? And that to even for a connecting flight?? Wheres the logic in that !

Christopher 2/11/2009 9:52:28 AM
Are you related to "Uncle Bob"?

Killa Kilbride 2/11/2009 9:55:25 AM
If South Africa can not do something so simple i wonder what is going to happen in 2010, as proudly south african i am, im glad i will not be in south africa during the world cup. Shocking of home affairs!!!

jackey 2/11/2009 9:56:04 AM
I must agree with Andre on this one.The Brits breed they own terrorist & the American terrrorist was trained in they own backyard. The passport issue is all just an excuse. The goverment should stop with its a$$ licking mentality and impose visa on the UK visitors too as we will get the much needed forex in this tough economic conditions.

Chris James (Brit) 2/11/2009 9:56:11 AM
When South Africa implemeted their immigration act in 1994 it lumped British Visitors alongside all others in limiting the duration of our stay and did us no favours! The new rules being implemented now for South Africans visting the UK are a direct result of incompetence by your authorities and in no way reflect the high regard most UK citizens feel for South Africa. I am ashamed at the charge being implemented and the UK should siimply issue them for free for SA citizen as a goodwill gesture.

Unhappy 2/11/2009 9:57:41 AM
What is the billing address for the Dept. of Home Affairs? I need to send them an invoice for R926.90 (11 February 2009 R/£ exchange rate of R14.26).

Gary 2/11/2009 9:57:50 AM
The people in charge of the passports are corrupt and any country looking after there people would not let this happen. Britain is correct! There is no control over our passports and the people who placed the S.A Goverment in control should ask the goverment why? Not Britain, Britain is looking after there citizens like our goverment should be doing.

RK 2/11/2009 10:02:48 AM
They can even make them R5000 a visa - we dont care. We love r our country and we r going no where. Keep yo Britain and we will keep r south africa hahahahah

Dick the Tick 2/11/2009 10:02:56 AM
....Bunn is Uncle Bob..! There are many Uncle Bob's who have posted e-mails here critical of the British Government for introducing the visa rule, yet the problem has been caused by the inefficient Dept of Home Affairs...look no further. This has been coming for years - one juts has to look at the number of obvious foreigners arriving at Jhb airport from other African destinations all armed with SA passports...the mind boggles as to how they obtqained them?

Robert 2/11/2009 10:03:58 AM
Is this yet another shining example of Batho Pele..? There may be another reason. The current lack of skills problems are a result of white people leaving SA. Maybe this is a deliberate plot to ensure that this is no longer an option. Does anyone think the current regime has the brains for this?

AndreS 2/11/2009 10:04:15 AM
Hey Gary and T. You must read everything i write and not only the heading. I know our government is crap but this is something that would have happened even if we had the best departments in the world. The number of people visiting the UK every year from South Africa must be among the highest of all countries visiting there. So its only logical that they want to make money out of us. I lived there for 4 years and I know how they opperate. If our Passports was okay they would find something else.

Auditing student 2/11/2009 10:09:37 AM
Once again our department of home affairs fails us for the tenth-time. I think the dep. has proved its worthlessness and laziness. Somebody is not doing their job and the whole dep. is blamed and shamed by it.

Angela 2/11/2009 10:09:41 AM
Well said Dean! I would only want to visit there to see family (who can afford it anyway!). Stop slating South Africa & think positive - We have a wonderful country. Britain is NOT a bed of roses! Especially now. Live there for a while - pay 1000 pounds a month for kid's daycare while you work - spend 2-3 hours a day commuting on the tube, risking getting your butt blown off by terrorists - not to mention the weather & the cost of living. You might change your mind about SA.

Angela 2/11/2009 10:13:57 AM
I've never met a nation that moans and complains so much about everything. Must be the most miserable nation on the planet! But then if I lived there, chances are that I'd be just as miserable!

Roelien 2/11/2009 10:15:52 AM
No wonder 2 of my kids are in the UK with ancestral visas - Thank God that my mom in law was born there to give my kids the opportunity to get their UK passports and to live in a FIRST WORLD country - Roelien

South African 2/11/2009 10:18:27 AM
If you travel to Switzerland on a SA passport, you now need an entry visa. All the doors are closing!

Boerseun 2/11/2009 10:19:20 AM
Strange how we were given time to resolve this issue. I believe a country has a right to make their own entry rules. The British set their rules and SA were to incompatent to comply. This country will soon be the junk yard the rest of Africa allready is. Viva ANC Viva Destruction.

AndreS 2/11/2009 10:19:46 AM
You guys don't read all that well do you. I agree, the government is crap. They don't know how to run any department. We need a new government who actually know what they're doing but this situation is only used as a good excuse by the brits. If i take my passport which i bought from someone at home office to the high commission i will still get a visa. so what's the point.

Henry 2/11/2009 10:20:58 AM
A couple of pros and cons from all contributers, certainly, but the issue is not the UK making an extra R1,000 per application, a tourist spend infinitely more than that, once inside the country! SA could certainly do the same, and should! But face it, the UK is right, we do harbour unsavoury characters. Thus blame the ANC Government for this sorry state of affairs!

Watcher 2/11/2009 10:27:33 AM
Illegal immigrants are the problem. Foreigners come to South Africa, bribe Home Affairs officials, and then abuse the SA passport to get into the UK. High tech passports won't solve the fundamental problem of corruption at Home Affairs. And people who bribe their way to getting faster service are part of the problem. The solution would be to conduct a full audit on the population register, and to mine the data to look for anomalies in the activities of the various home affairs offices, as well as to conduct undercover sting operations. Sadly, the political will is missing, even if the steps required are clear, and until that changes, expect South African passports to be treated with suspicion. On the other hand the entire UK migration systems smacks of a money-making scheme. I hope they come down to earth with a bump now that their finance-based economy is in trouble.

eric 2/11/2009 10:30:13 AM
Look I think this was long time coming anyway since UK is part of the EU. I travel to the UK annualy and its gonna be a hassle, just like getting a schengen visa....

Kevin 2/11/2009 10:38:15 AM
Thanks to all the South African's who have screwed the system over there. say what you want and blame the government but this stems from all the people going over there and overstaying visas, working illegally, and finding some scam. Why do you think the working holiday visa was scrapped. Now the rest of us that stuck to the rules are the ones to suffer as well as the future generations of South Africans who will not get that opportunity.

Stampie McPloeg 2/11/2009 10:49:31 AM
Has anyone really thought about why anyone would want to live in a country that is growing out of its own culture? Its all now full of bored people and 3rd world garbage that want free hand outs. Have a look at the weather, Have a look at the price of property, Have a look at the moral. We have nothing to lose by not going there. We just need to tighten up our borders, charge the corrupt officials, then keep the same free loaders out. Charge access to our stunning weather and cheaper living!

Cracker 2/11/2009 10:56:08 AM
Apply for a passport, it arrives within 2 weeks. Apply for copy of birth certificates etc, they arrive in 5 days...wipe the crap out of your eyes and stop voting ANC. My brother has been waiting 10 months for a copy of his birth certificate!!! Perhaps he'd get it quicker if he greased some dimwits palm...Britain is not brilliant but it is 1st world. We do have public transport that runs on time. Buses do not get burnt if there's a bit of competition. S.A is heading for the dark ages....fast!!

It`s just a lame excuse for the Britsfor ther security paranoia/obsession, their country is flooded by people from within the EU, still they wanna blame it on the South African passports. Joanna, RSA does not need coconuts go & join you Brits. Reciprocity must apply we can`t for their messy financial situation under this pretence and still let them come here without visas. TP

... wow, at least they didn't blame Apartheid!

rags 2/11/2009 11:35:08 AM
You can buy a passport over the counter any place in RSA The same with a RSA id doc. The ANC gave RSA id books to any one who wanted one just to get votes. So why are you so surprised that the rest of the world is looking at RSA citizens if they criminals. Just look around how many illegal people is in South Africa and the get political assylum (including RSA passport)with the drop of a hat($$$$)

Deedles 2/11/2009 12:11:04 PM
It appears all you South Africans want to do is come to the UK and sponge off the hospitality of the English people. Make as much money as you can, give nothing back and return to SA. At least when we come to SA we contribute significantly to the overall economy's wealth through our visits to your country. Only when you have been attacked 7/7 then you have room for comment!!!

Richard Smal 2/11/2009 12:12:45 PM
If thinking a visa is a pain, how about trying to get a new passportf from Home Affairs. The latest score is 8 months, if applying from overseas.

Vics 2/11/2009 12:22:38 PM
this is aweful, with costs of a flight its alomost impossible for young people like myself to travel and now i must fork out another R1000 on top of all of that. getting anything out of any governtment dept is like pulling teeth i wonder if all the new visa applicatins are gonna cause even greater delays and issues in home affairs..... it took long enough to get an id book and passport out of them

JOHN RICHMOND 2/11/2009 12:28:36 PM

John Arpin 2/11/2009 12:28:56 PM
Hey Deedles - Surprise surprise mate...it's us Saffas & all the other foreigners...millions of us that are paying our UK taxes & NIS for you lazy idiots to sit on your lazy arses and claim benefits from your government, yet we cannot claim same benefits. Wake up mate if all us foreigners left the UK you'll end up like Zimbabwe as we own all your utility services & we do all your work. Have another cuppa there mate while I keep your tubes running ok.

Thomas 2/11/2009 12:30:18 PM
typical of a failed department. it has taken me over 9 months to get an unabridged marriage certificate... it finally took my father driving to the head office in Pretoria and demanding to see someone to make anything happen (I live in Switzerland now, so I couldn't fight that battle myself).Unfortunately, the SA passport is laughed at in Europe.I am a proud South African, but the corruption and mismanagement in nearly every govt. dept is runing the country!

Riyaz 2/11/2009 12:45:00 PM
Corrupt government officilas, unskilled staff in govenment departments, high crime rate, over occupied prisons, electricity power cuts, high cost of living..., and now contaminated water, are we heading for Zimbabwe??

David 2/11/2009 12:49:13 PM
Don't you realise that the English don't care too much about South Africa. It's seen a dangerous and corrupt country. South Africa was given a chance to get their house (Home Affairs) in order and they couldn't or wouldn't comply. All the British are doing is protecting their borders and have every right to do that.

UK Supporter 2/11/2009 12:51:56 PM
Such hypocricy from all the anti-Brits, but not unexpected from the average South African who were happy to go earn Pounds when they did not need a visa. It is the fault of Home Affairs for not getting their house in order - took my daughter 8 months to get a legitimate SA passport. Can you go to Aus/USA/Canada without paying for a visa? Can we afford to turn away tourists to SA? No!!! Think about it.

deedles 2/11/2009 12:59:57 PM
Hey John Arpin - great that you are paying your taxes and so you should be it's the law in Britian!! No points for that I'm afraid- unlike the culture in SA to skirt around paying any tax. By the way John, we survived before the SAFFAS and others arrived- no doubt we will survive without you guys. Trust me you are doing us no favours, was wondering how many Brits are working in SA by comparisson not much, perhaps you should consider changing those tubes back at Eskom SA. Time for a cuppa...

Anon 2/11/2009 1:07:05 PM
My my my-people are bitter out there. This is something the UK government's been considering for a while because most people would go there and make the 2 year working hoilidaymaker permanently (most of varsity friends did that 4 years ago and they are still there, still without a legal working Visa). Shocking to see that so many people think it is the government's fault. STOP BEING NAG, IT"S REALLY BORING.

Marthin Grobler 2/11/2009 1:27:10 PM
How come Botswana, Brazil, Malaysia, Mauritius, Namibia, Trinidad and Tobago could get their home affairs in order but we could not. It's not as if we were the only country required to shape things up! Stop blaming the british for being greedy, our government had the same amount of time to fix the system than the other countries, our government just didn't care!

Richard 2/11/2009 1:33:52 PM
THis is soo unfair, corrupt officials who sell our passports now make it too expensive for how many other people like me to visit my family who live in the UK. It makes me want to leave even more. We're sooo close to becoming like Zim it's unreal.
