Komatipoort - A man has been trampled to death by an elephant after he and a game ranger tried to chase a herd on to a road for tourists to see.
Inspector Francois Vermaak said the man was trampled on Friday at Gazebo game ranch, about 40km from Komatipoort.
Vermaak said Laybert Magagula, who worked on the ranch as a tracker, startled a cow and her young calf while trying to get the herd on to the road.
The cow became nervous, gave chase and walked over him.
He said that although the elephants were used to humans, the elephant that trampled the man was protective because she had a calf.
The game ranger was unhurt.
