East London - A 40-year-old man was crushed to death by the truck on which he worked after it off-loaded gravel at Buffalo Flats, East London, on Monday, said Eastern Cape police.
Inspector Stephen Marais said the man and the truck driver had just finished off-loading gravel in Greenpoint Road about 07:00 when the tip of the heavy-duty vehicle got stuck as it was descending.
The man jumped between the chassis and the tip to release it. The man could not move out of the way of the descending tip, which squashed him, killing him instantly.
It was alleged the truck was not licensed and has been taken in for a roadworthy test.
If the vehicle is found to be unroadworthy, the driver will be charged with murder, driving an unlicensed vehicle, as well as driving a vehicle that is not roadworthy.
The man's name has not been released because his next of kin have not been notified.
