Polokwane - A Thohoyandou police inspector is to be investigated for allegedly defeating the ends of justice, the Democratic Alliance said on Thursday.
A case had been opened with the Independent Complaints Directorate, DA provincial legislature member Meisie Kennedy said in a statement.
In August last year the DA complained to the ICD that there was anecdotal evidence the inspector had allegedly tried to improperly influence a fast food cashier in Thohoyandou who had been assaulted, allegedly by her boss.
The woman apparently wanted to lay charges of assault against her employer, who is also friends with the policeman.
"This case should send a clear message to other police officials that we will hold them accountable in their exercise of public duty," Kennedy said.
"Police are supposed to be protecting the citizens against crime and violence and not covering up for them. We will closely monitor this case to ensure that [the woman] is not threatened in any way and that she gets fair treatment."
