Johannesburg - A robber was shot dead and a policeman wounded during a shootout between robbers and police in Ivory Park, Tembisa on Friday, police said.
Spokesperson Lesiba Manamela said three armed men forced their way into a house in Extension 2 on Thursday night, then shot and wounded two people in the house before robbing them of a television set, DVD player and blankets.
He said the police cornered the three in Extension 7 on Friday morning and a shoot-out ensued between the police and the robbers.
One of the robbers was shot dead, another one was arrested while the third managed to runaway.
A police constable was shot in the leg and was receiving treatment in hospital.
All items reported stolen were found in their possession.
The arrested man was charged with house robbery, three counts of attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He would appear in the Tembisa Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Manamela said police were investigating the possibility that the robbers could be linked to other house robberies in which three people were shot dead in August.
