Carletonville - Three mine workers who were trapped underground were killed following a pressure build-up at the Driefontein Gold Mine near Carletonville on Monday.
Gold Fields spokesperson Willie Jacobsz said the miners were working in a stope when the accident occurred. A stope is an area in which the rocks are broken.
Jacobsz said the accident was caused by a slight earthquake underground at 1 Shaft East, about 2 600m below the surface.
Another three miners were rescued earlier.
