Heidelberg - A security guard was arrested in Zonkiziswe near here early on Tuesday morning on an allegation of perjury after he allegedly lied about a hijacking, police said.
Captain Thobile Xakeka said the 39-year-old man went to the police station in Zonkiziswe and reported a case of hijacking. He also told police he knew where the vehicle was parked.
Police went to the place the man had told them about and found the vehicle, which belonged to his employer.
Xakeka said: "The police became suspicious; how did this man know where the car was after he had been hijacked."
On further investigation they found the man had allegedly driven around the township with the company vehicle without permission after posting guards.
It was believed he crashed the car, because the vehicle's front was extensively damaged.
It was also believed the man concocted the story to avoid getting into trouble with his employer.
He was arrested and was due to appear in Heidelberg magistrate's court soon.
