Stellenbosch - The heavy-handed behaviour of police in drug busts in three night spots might end up in court after various partygoers lodged complaints against the police.

The raids took place in the Mystic Boer, Bohemia and the Springbok Pub early on Saturday morning.

According to police, drugs were found in all three places.

Reports claim that the police used pepper spray and fired shots. Female partygoers were allegedly searched by a male policeman.

Police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana said the drug busts, at about 01:00, yielded six pieces of hashish, 150g dagga and some cocaine.

He said that no one had been arrested because the drugs that were found had been left behind in the clubs.

Sinyangana added that complaints over police conduct would be investigated thoroughly.

Among those allegedly manhandled in Bohemia were a Belgian poet and a Dutch author.

Cellphone recording

The police apparently ordered students to destroy cellphone recordings of the raids. Some students claim their cellphones were broken.

Video recordings from closed-circuit television cameras in two of the popular night spots show how the police stormed in with guns and shoved both male and female students around without them putting up any resistance.

They also show the police spraying pepper spray in students' faces while they were sitting on the ground.

"You can't search my vagina!" a distressed female student cried out, according to one of the barmen at Bohemia, who added that the girl had been pawed by the police.

Asthmatics and diabetics told how they had been prevented by the police from seeking medical treatment.

Jan Oberholzer, co-owner of Bohemia, said that there were holes in the ceiling of the establishment which were "seemingly bullet holes".

The video material clearly shows shots being fired as the police storm in.

Threatened with shotguns

Sinyangana said no shots had been fired.

Eyewitnesses said that the police had guns - including shotguns - with them at all times and that these were used to threaten, push and even hit students.

Although the police later said that the weapons had not been loaded, a cartridge was removed from the street outside the Springbok Pub after a policeman reloaded his weapon and the cartridge fell out.

Willem Coertzen, owner of Mystic Boer, who had been handcuffed and reportedly knocked in the face with a gun, said that the police had done the same sort of thing last year and had got away with it.

"The difference is that we have video evidence this time."

A law student, Gillian Armstrong, said she had been beaten, sprayed with pepper spray and thrown to the ground.

Woman pulled by her hair

Eyewitnesses told how a female student had been hit by a police officer because she had been "in his way".

A shocked woman, who only identified herself as Adel, told how she was slapped and beaten several times by a police officer.

Eyewitnesses told how a woman was pulled across the street by her hair.

After the police realised that photos and videos had been captured on cellphones, they tried to force the students to destroy the evidence by threatening them that they would be detained.

This is the third time in a week where I read in a national newspaper that the South African Police Services is involved or condones rape, police britality and feeling up of women. Sis man you are a disgrace to human kind.

Georg 3/10/2008 7:59:55 AM
Not the first time that that has happened in Stellenbosch! I was at the previous ones and they came up with the lamest excuses for them. The owners don't want to pay bribes is probably the reasons. This tme it blew up in their faces! Good job our boys in blue!

Chantelle 3/10/2008 8:11:04 AM
This is so disgusting. These police officers give the good guys in the police force a bad name! It's wonderful that they have video evidence. Hopefully something will be done about this.

Pangea 3/10/2008 8:14:54 AM
It is very disturbing that this keeps on happening. We have gone through this so many time and the same story is played out. Men (in uniform this time) physically and sexually assualting women, Racist undertones in the motives and a excessive violence against humans. I hope these cops get fired and those who committed sexual assault go to jail.

riaan 3/10/2008 8:16:50 AM
I was at Springbok when the police raided it and I must say I was completely shocked by how the police treated the revellers there. I had a friend who was pepper sprayed in the face for doing absolutely nothing. Outside I found a girl suffering from very bad asthma (from the liberal use of pepper spray), luckily I had an inhaler with me which she used. Why were innocent people being treated like criminals? Where are our rights as law abiding, tax paying citizens of SA?

Nick 3/10/2008 8:21:16 AM
SA Police Service? Who are they exactly serving? Not the community. Not the people they are supposed to protect. Then whom? They clearly don't know themselves. Police management has to urgently give attention to the service part of policing. Oops, but that includes Selebi...

"Among those allegedly manhandled in Bohemia were a Belgian poet and a Dutch author." It is wellknown that in these clubs there is a big drugs scene. And stop getting embarrassed because belgian and dutch tourists were caught in it. In their countries, police raids go the same way.

sisonke 3/10/2008 8:26:38 AM
Typical cowardly behaviour from the SAPS, attacking a "soft target" rather than actually doing their job, namely some version of "to serve and protect". Shame on them.

T Bone 3/10/2008 8:32:31 AM
It seems the "cops" are re-inforcing and reminding the public as to why they are referred to as "PIGS"

Me 3/10/2008 8:40:06 AM
I was there, and am disgusted by the police's behaviour. To think these people are to protect me, and they hit me with the back of a shotgun and point it in my face. To hear how they searched my girlfriend and violated/mollested her. How a girl was his to the floor by a male policeman. I can go on and on. Worthless mothers!

Villian 3/10/2008 8:42:58 AM
I was at a local club in Jo'burg a couple of weeks ago when the police raided. They also used excessive force, strangling and shoving people, as soon as a question was asked as to why the need for force, it just spurred them on to use more force. I have no problem with the police doing their jobs and raiding venues, but the bully tactics are uncalled for.

Marius 3/10/2008 8:44:35 AM
All these police officers should be suspended from their duties. These are trained people consciously applying the wrong level of force. It is expected that they should be able to gauge a situation and act in a responsible manner. Fact is, they are not ignorant or else they wouldn't have wanted to destroy the video evidence. Students using drugs are not the problem, focus should be drawn to the people who deal the drugs, that's obvious.

Stellenbosch resident 3/10/2008 8:50:39 AM
Maties, you had it coming. Your own sober and/or drunken behaviour leaves much to be desired at the best of times. While the police action might have been overboard, frankly ? guys AND girls ? some of you ask for it. Grow up, behave yourselves as proper citizens, or face the law. And as an old Rhodian, I know what I'm talking about.

Rob 3/10/2008 8:56:51 AM
This savagery by cops must be ended! Why don't these 'tough guys' try those tactics on criminals!!!!!

Wake-up 3/10/2008 9:00:32 AM
This is what we have become accustomed to. The SAPS is rotten from the very top downward. And MUCH worse than in the apartheid years.

Llewellyn 3/10/2008 9:00:41 AM
Is this what South Africa is coming to, where we are as afraid of the police as we are of criminals? There are some very good police officers out there, and they have our thanks... too bad there are a few out there on power trips who think hitting women and spraying innocent people with pepper spray serves the law and "protects" us...

Concerned 3/10/2008 9:01:00 AM
Is Stellenbosch safer now that a few students were pushed around? 5 cars were stolen in the village under the cops' noses this weekend. Little men with uniforms and guns and ego - very dangerous - US should prevent this from happening!

ME 3/10/2008 9:01:41 AM
Well, well, well! Same old story..aren't we always big & strong when we have a badge & a gun? Maybe our cops are watching too many US S.W.A.T. doccies on TV... that's to say if they aren't sleeping on the job! Brute force = maybe a bit of braun but NO brains! Did they really think they can get away with a bit of cheap "feely touchy" just because they are cops? Sickening! I'm definitely NOT telling my kids to trust & get help from cops anymore...not in this country anyway!

Acid0 3/10/2008 9:07:44 AM
Its funny how the comments changes after they realize that there is footage taken of the raid. I support the police to do these raids so that the youth wont be tainted but why cant the police do this in a fashionable way so that we as public dont loose respct for them?

creationist 3/10/2008 9:12:50 AM
Who is going to investigate this incident, especially now that we are scorpion-less? It's really sad to know that nothing is going to happen here. We've gotta fight for our right to party!!

Francois 3/10/2008 9:18:30 AM
I'm shocked this is the 3rd case of police brutality in the western cape in so many months. The police is out of control.

Willem Olivier 3/10/2008 9:18:42 AM
I can't believe that the police would hurt their own fragile reputation so much. What they did was idiotic and shamefull. And for what? They didnt even find any serious amounts of drugs. They found about R1000 worth of drugs and spent about R100 000 in police hours and have made themselves open to about R1 000 000 worth of law suits.

Jacob 3/10/2008 9:23:12 AM
Just another fine example of the police force's hunger for power. As if there are not enough rapists and murderers walking the street of our cities, they have to use all their manpower in botched "drug busts", in which the police are usually the ones that end up using the drugs themselves anyway. How can a country function properly when innocent citizens are manhandled and abused in this way? I sincerely hope that the officers responsible for this have the harshest penalties bestowed on them.

The People 3/10/2008 9:27:12 AM
I checked out the video and all I can say is OMG! The police from Stellenbosch act like they can do anything they want because they are the police?! Fire them all!!!
