Pretoria - A 51-year-old Pretoria man was admitted to hospital after sustaining a bullet wound to his leg when he was shot by a burglar who was himself shot and killed, police said on Saturday.
Inspector Anton Breedt said the man was asleep in his house in Calsak Street, Erasmus Kloof around 01:00 when he was woken up by a burglar alarm.
He armed himself and went outside to investigate where he was met by a security company patrol responding to the alarm.
Breedt said the security patrol went away when all seemed to be clear and the man went back into the house where he was confronted by an intruder.
He said gunshots were exchanged. The owner was hit in the right leg and the intruder was shot in the chest and died at the scene.
Following official procedure in such incidents, murder and attempted murder dockets were opened and the case would be investigated, Breedt said.
