Four doctors took kickbacks

Johannesburg - Four doctors were found guilty on Wednesday of accepting kickbacks from a radiology practice at the Linksfield Park Clinic, said the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
The council said Percy Miller, Ian Weinberg, Leonard Nainkin and Julian Preddy were found guilty of unprofessional conduct.
According to the charge sheet, between 1993 and 1999 the doctors received money for referring patients to the practice of radiologists of Dr J Illes and partners.
The HPSCA has recommended that all four doctors be removed from the register, which would prevent them from working in their respective fields.
The council said doctors who accepted kickbacks for referring patients were, most likely, not acting in the best interest of their patients.
An application by the four doctors for a postponement to enable their legal representatives to prepare evidence in mitigation was granted.
The HPSCA's professional conduct committee will reconvene to hear this evidence on June 26 and 27 2003, after which the penalty will be imposed.
