Johannesburg - A South African man missing in Iraq was not known to be dead, the Foreign Affairs Department said on Friday.
Foreign Affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said Harry Pretorius was still classified as missing.
"We can confirm that he is missing but has not yet been confirmed dead. Our mission in Amman, Jordan is investigating the whereabouts of this South African," Mamoepa said.
He said as soon as Pretorius's whereabouts were known the public would be advised.
Pretorius, a gun shop owner from George, who went to work as a bodyguard in Iraq, was believed to have come under attack during an ambush in Mosul on Monday.
He last contacted his family on Sunday.
