George - An elderly couple were recovering in hospital after four men attacked and robbed them of a "substantial" amount of money on their Vanwyksdorp farm near Ladismith, said Southern Cape police on Sunday.
Spokesperson Ntobeko Mangqwengwe said the four men fled with the couple's firearm on Saturday night.
"It is not clear how the men gained entry into the farmhouse and we haven't been able to get a full statement from the couple because they were badly assaulted by the gang."
Two of the men, aged 58 and 33, had been arrested, but the other two were still at large, he said.
Mangqwengwe said a VW Jetta allegedly used by the gang was recovered a few kilometres from the farm.
"It seems they ran out of petrol and abandoned the car which had a George registration plate," he said.
