Docs: Time for speeches over

Johannesburg - The people of Gauteng need medical doctors and not spin doctors, said the provincial African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) on Saturday.
Party leader and MPL Dr Lydia Meshoe said: "The time for impressive speeches is long over. Our health department must make our hospitals work. Proper management, wise investment and genuine care are needed."
"How can we expect our health professionals to work productively when toilets, lifts, technical equipment, procurement systems and so forth do not?"
Meshoe said the ACDP had warned for years of impending disaster in the health sector and repeatedly asked for more money and better working conditions for health workers.
"For the sake of the people of South Africa, the Department of Health must negotiate speedily, meaningfully and in good faith with our public sector doctors," she said.
Adding that doctors worked excruciatingly long hours and made life and death decisions every day while also required to repay huge study loans.
