Can Miss SA be an ex-Mr?

2008-08-18 09:32

Eagan Williamson

Johannesburg - The organisers of the annual Miss South Africa pageant have been in crisis the past week, after a woman who had had a sex-change operation wanted to enrol in a workshop for prospective participants, and encountered a very chilly welcome.

The identity of the woman, who used to be a man, was not revealed by Sun International, which owns the pageant.

It must still be decided whether the woman may participate in the contest.

The woman, whose age is also unknown, was apparently furious at the workshop in Johannesburg last week and threatened to take legal steps against the organisers.

Sue Klerck, the marketing manager of the pageant, confirmed the incident on Sunday, but could not give further information.

Natural born women

Laurie Botha, an expert in beauty pageants and the owner of an agency that scouts for prospective participants for the contest, said that the local rules of the contest had to be considered first.

The rules "say nothing specifically about the participation of transgender people.

"But the international competition rules can be used as a yardstick because the local winner will have to be sent to big competitions like Miss World later on."

Klerck said they have been using international rules as a yardstick for years, and these specifically dictate that participants have to be natural born women.

this is not acceptable, i think stick to rules, if u not born a woman, then this is not acceptable, why not have a competition for those who do have sex changes - who has the best makeover.......now world is really getting strange

hehehehe 8/18/2008 10:32:08 AM
No, now they gone too far...what next?

Tebogo 8/18/2008 10:34:46 AM
Just watch, this might just go to the ConCourt for discrimination. I think "she" should enter transgender pageants. Best way to start a week. Had a good laugh.

Ag please man! That's a moral criteria...which is less objective than a legal criteria. When one changes their gender- legally, one is no longer a Mr, but a miss and can therefore be legally referred as such! Besides gender identity is genetic- so this person is really a woman! The psychologists will tell u so...let her in! She's prolly prettier than them "naturally born women!"...besides rules are meant to be broken- break the rules- let her in, be brave!

thiyiwe 8/18/2008 10:56:26 AM
Legally she is a woman and therefore it is her democratic right to enter miss sa and not be discrimated against.

Peoples's morals have gone done really, rules are rules but i believe it's an individual's choice or selfishness to change the God given commands. chidi silas

NO, NO, NO, absolutely NO. If you are not born a woman don't participate.

MissLeds 8/18/2008 11:15:08 AM
If (s)he had not divulged that (s)he was born a man, who would have known? Let him be man (excuse the pun)

Anon 8/18/2008 11:18:44 AM
personally, i don't see a problem with this, it's like asking if they are lesbian and those who wish to partake who are lesbian, get told, nope, your not straight, get out, it's funny, that people are more okay with people who are gay or lesbian, than those who are transexual, i say, let her enter

Black people were not allowed in certain shops and shopping centres in the apartheid era. Operations can completely transform a man into a woman. I say let them compete if they physically completely(lack of adams apple and all lol) resemble a woman if not they will have to enter Mr SA(if there is such a thing)

its strange how we have come to accept, the direction in which the world is moving, we have standrds for everything, yet we are loosing our moral compass.
