Johannesburg - Five foreigners were arrested in Johannesburg and surrounding areas on Monday for fraud and possession of fraudulent documents, metro police said.
Inspector Edna Mamonyane said police were called by the Diepsloot ABSA branch after a man tried to open a bank account using a fraudulent ID around 10:00.
When police arrested the man he referred them to the person he claimed had made the document for him.
The second man was arrested after he was telephoned and directed police to his work place.
"We ended up arresting a total of five men in connection with the scam."
The five were arrested in Diepsloot, Berea, and Park Station.
When police arrested the five they found in their possession many different documents such as IDs, passports, marriage certificates, visas, asylum seekers documents, cheque books and different stamps from the home affairs departments.
One of them also had different stamps from different African countries and from the United States and Britain, she said.
The five suspects were a Nigerian, a Ghanaian, a Zimbabwean, a Zambian and an Angolan.
Police expected to arrest more people on Tuesday as they were following leads given by the suspects, Mamonyane said.
