Pretoria - South Africa needs to accelerate
land
reform and settle more empowerment farmers, said department of land affairs
official Carmen van der Merwe at an AMT agricultural outlook conference on
Wednesday.
The South African government currently has the stated objective of
redistributing 30% of the county's arable land by 2015, she added.
The current land reform programme is a market-assisted land reform
process,
which requires partnerships between the South African government and the
commercial agricultural sector.
"There is a need for improved focus, collaboration and co-ordination
between public and private institutions," Van der Merwe said.
The current redistribution of land in South Africa is based on a willing
buyer, willing seller approach.
