Table Mountain crime a concern

2007-08-20 22:31

Cape Town - Western Cape tourism MEC Lynne Brown has expressed concern about threats to visitors to Table Mountain following weekend muggings.

Several groups of hikers, tourists among them, were robbed on Lion's Head on Sunday in the latest of a string of attacks that have taken place on the mountain chain.

"As tourism minister of the province, I am concerned that one of our tourism icons is under threat - not only for tourists but also for locals," Brown said.

"All who visit Table Mountain, whether local or foreigner, should be able to do so unmolested."

She said her ministry planned to meet Sanparks and the provincial department of community safety to consider solutions.

It also wanted to get in touch with the Mountain Club of South Africa to hear its suggestions.
