Ambassador in sex scandal

Johannesburg - South Africa's ambassador to Indonesia, who was found guilty two years ago on several charges of sexual harassment, is facing criminal action after more allegations of harassment were levelled against him.

The department of foreign affairs is apparently dragging its feet over taking action against him and the case has now been taken to the Public Servants Association (PSA).

In negotiations with the PSA, the department said the case against Norman Mashabane, South Africa's ambassador in Indonesia, is a sensitive matter that could become a huge embarrassment for the department.

The department suggested that the latest plaintiff be placed on leave until the case is concluded.

Foreign affairs said the matter was under appeal at present and no further details could be divulged.

Anton Louwrens of the PSA said his organisation has now instituted legal action against the department on behalf of the plaintiff, a member of the organisation. The PSA knows of 22 charges against Mashabane.

A private lawyer is apparently also busy with a civil claim.

Sexual harassment

These steps follow after a departmental investigation found Mashabane guilty of sexual harassment several months ago.

The latest plaintiff, as well as at least one of the other alleged victims, still works in Mashabane's office.

Louwrens said this was unacceptable - especially since further harassment apparently took place.

"We have requested the ambassador's suspension pending the outcome of the internal investigation.

"However, it seems as if the department is more concerned about keeping him in his post than about the rights of his female colleagues."

He said the latest complaint is related to incidents in 2001. The PSA member only approached the PSA with her problem a month ago.

Foreign affairs officials apparently travelled to Indonesia over the weekend to continue the investigation.
