Hermanus - A security guard was fatally shot on Tuesday by three armed robbers, while delivering money to a bank in Hermanus, Western Cape police said.
"The robbery occurred outside a bank in Main Road, Hermanus. Two CW security guards were about to deliver cash to the bank when they were approached by three armed men," said Superintendent Billy Jones.
"The men fired a number of shots at both guards. A 44-year-old guard died after being shot in the head and chest. The other guard was unharmed," Jones said.
The men fled the scene in a Toyota Avante, with a cash-box containing an undisclosed amount of money. Two other men were waiting in the vehicle.
"Alert police spotted the vehicle in the immediate vicinity and gave chase. The suspects drove to the new Harbour area in Hermanus where they got out and fled on foot between the nearby bushes."
Police chased the robbers and arrested all five. The men, aged between 25-31 years, are from the Strand.
They will face charges of murder and armed robbery at the Hermanus Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
