Hunt on for Petersen's killers

2006-12-17 11:02

Cape Town - The hunt is still on for the killers of South African theatre and TV great Taliep Petersen.

He was killed in his home in Athlone late on Saturday night - apparently in a robbery. Police say there was a single shot in the back of his neck.

Police spokesperson Billy Jones says two men, both of them wearing ski-masks, gained entry to the house at the front door.

Family members say they think they heard the door-bell ring and Petersen might have gone to open it.

The men allegedly held Petersen and the rest of the family at gun point.

Jones says according to the witnesses, the men robbed them of their cellphones, watches and other small items before locking them in their bedrooms.

They took Petersen to the TV room, where he was also robbed of cash and a cellphone.

According to family members, they heard one gun shot in the TV-room while they were still locked in their bedrooms.

Petersen's body was found moments later in the TV-room with a bullet wound behind the neck. His hands and feet were tied with tie-strips.

The suspects reportedly fled the scene in an unknown vehicle and they are still at large.

And so we lose yet another great artist to crime. Sad how the article has to end with "they are still at large" - they probably will stay that way till the crime issue is addressed in SA. It's because of our pathetic police service that these things happen and these criminals know they can get away with it. Taliep will be in the hearts of many and remembered as one of South Africa's greatest.

One of the truly great gems of our country taken selfishly, along with the rest of country's incredible beauty and rich resources... what a sad tragedy it is all going up in smoke. Those animals!

robyn 12/17/2006 12:22:56 PM
We reel, yet again, with horror, but hardly surprise. How many more people must die, be attacked, be robbed, be raped, before the powers-that-be know where their priorities should be? This land is no longer weeping: it is heaving with great, shuddering sobs that just go on and on and on.

rosalka 12/17/2006 1:14:27 PM
rest in peace brother. there is a lot of hate in our hard and terribly sad country...

Koos 12/17/2006 1:23:04 PM
Is there anybody out there that haven't been affected by such hideous tragedies one way or another - it just seems closer to home when it is a celebrity, which is sad in itself. But there will be many, many more...for the powers-that-be lavish behind electric fences and personal bodyguards, and seem to be more intent on reminiscing about the "struggle" or fighting over office for the sake of being there, rather than being concerned about the very people they struggled for. Leadership? hah..

The cruel murder of Taliep for some hardware and cash is indicative of the state we are living in. When will something drastic be done to break this senseless cycle. The nation should unite against the violence and say no more...

Ivan 12/17/2006 2:25:58 PM
It is indeed a great shock to all of us, especially a celebrity who was loved by every-one, namely, Taliep. When will our justice system become harsher in dealing with culprits who mercessly carry out deeds like this ? I say, re-introduce the death penalty !

Taliep Petersen is gone, his work, his talent, his devotion to his people, the arts, and South Africa, was massive.I WILL NEVER FORGET HIM -It was NOT HIS TIME TO REST,THIS WAS NOT GOD'S WILL - GOD'S WILL FOR TALIEP WAS TO KEEP ON MAKING MUSIC AND MAGIC,TO UPLIFT THE ASPIRING ARTISTS FROM THE DOWNTRODDEN COMMUNITIES AND TO REALIZE THEIR DREAMS.For God's sake,Pres Mbeki - PROTECT OUR PEOPLE,give us hope.Let the world look at us with respect just ONCE!!ONLY YOU can do it. AMANDLA!AWETHU!!R.I.P Taliep x

It's sad.It makes me sick to my stomach that these horrific deeds continue on a daily basis. Iraq has an excuse, what's ours.I love my country, I love our people, but this senseless and inhumane behaviour can no longer be tolerated. President Mbeki, Madiba, Ebrahim Rasool and all other role-players, do something! Our country has been saved from a civil war, but are our citizens any better off?To the Petersen Family..May Allah put sabr in your hearts,Insha-allah.Faizel
