Durban - A man was shot and critically wounded near a Durban informal settlement on Tuesday in what is believed to have been an attempted hijacking, police said.
Sydenham Senior Superintendent Glen Nyager said details of the shooting were not immediately available.
Initial investigations had revealed that the man was in his bakkie on Kennedy Road near the Kennedy Road informal settlement.
Nyager said it appeared that the man had been approached and realising that something was amiss started his bakkie and attempted to drive off. One shell casing was found near the scene.
The gunshot alerted locals who in turn alerted police and paramedics.
ER24 spokesperson Derek Banks said the man, believed to be in his 30s, was in a critical condition.
He had been shot in the chest and was taken to Durban's Entabeni Hospital.
