Durban - Metro police arrested more than 5 000 motorists for speeding in June, and on Monday said they would continue their clampdown.
Superintendent John Tyala said 5 552 speed violators were arrested, the majority having been caught in the 80km/h zone along the N3 freeway, between the tollgate and Spaghetti Junction.
He said the highest speed recorded along that stretch of road was 161km/h.
"In a 70 km/h zone, we caught a man driving his BMW at 216 km/h," said Tyala.
He said motorists had been ignoring continued warnings to reduce speed.
"We shall continue to target the speed violators and bring them into book," he said.
