Durban - An 18-month-old boy died after being struck by a train near the KwaZulu-Natal midlands town of Nottingham Road on Monday, police said.
Police spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan said that the baby had been playing on the tracks with his two-year old cousin when the accident occurred on the track at Trinand Farm near the settlement of Balgowan, about 10km from Nottingham Road.
Jeevan said the train driver had seen the two toddlers, but had been unable to bring the train to a halt.
The two had wandered unseen from their home which was about 500 metres away from the accident scene, alongside the railway track.
The two-year old was rushed to a nearby clinic from where he was airlifted to hospital.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the boy was in a critical condition.
The toddlers had been in the care of their grandmother and police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
