Cape Town - A senior ANC MP has asked Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula to draw up a register of convicted sexual offenders and display their names in public.
The government should "review" legislation which protects the identities of juvenile offenders convicted of rape, said Mathupa Mokoena, chairperson of the security and constitutional affairs committee.
He branded rapists of women and children "madmen" waging war against the female body.
Their names and even photographs should be publicised, he said.
"It's high time legislation was revised which prohibits the names of juvenile rapists to be made pubic. We handle them with kid gloves while they terrorise our mothers and daughters," said Mokoena.
He said it was unacceptable that children as young as 14 were charged with rape.
