Mobs armed with petrol run amok

2008-05-19 15:40

Johannesburg - Mobs armed with knives, clubs and jugs of petrol were on Monday running amok in Johannesburg townships as xenophopbic attacks escalated.

The mobs targeted mostly Zimbabweans and Mozambicans, who are accused of taking jobs and fuelling the high rate of violent crime.

There are an estimated three million Zimbabweans living in South Africa.

The unrest has killed at least 22 people since last week.

Some of the victims were set ablaze.

Women were raped, shops and homes looted and dozens of shacks burnt to the ground. Scores have been arrested.

Police fired rubber bullets at rioters in communities around Johannesburg and in the central business district.

"This is a war," said Lucas Zimila, a 60-year-old Mozambican man who was attacked by a machete-wielding mob while sleeping in his shack in Tembisa, north of Johannesburg, on Sunday night.

"They screamed at me to get out, that I didn't belong here.

Then they burned everything in my house," said Zimila, who suffered a 25cm gash in his head.

'We want the army here'

The foreign-born residents say that far from being criminals they are more often the victims of crime.

Several told Reuters organised criminals were using the xenophobic violence as cover to rob and loot.

"We want the army here. The police can't protect us," said Beto Inancio, another Mozambican in Tembisa.

Both President Thabo Mbeki and ANC leader Jacob Zuma have called for an end to the violence.

Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela also weighed in, saying he was saddened by rising hatred of foreigners.

His Nelson Mandela Foundation issued a statement deploring the attacks and said it was helping children affected by the violence.

Hundreds of immigrants have taken refuge in police stations, churches and government offices.

"It's getting worse. They keep coming here because this is a safe place," said Simon Ramollo, a community activist who was arranging bedding and meals for about 200 foreigners who sought shelter at a community centre.

Foreigners from poorer African countries have been lured by work in South Africa's mines, farms and homes, and by one of the world's most liberal immigration and refugee policies.

Thabo Mbeki, how about some help here....

Boyza 5/19/2008 4:30:18 PM
Mr President, please for once go to the ground and show some leadership. The time for diplomacy is over. Zuma and Mbeki must unite, go to the ground and calm the people down!!! The police won't solve this crisis without the leadership of the Presidency. Otherwise this will quickly spread all over the country...

Kobus Hattingh 5/19/2008 4:35:40 PM
Now this is what you reap with your quiet diplomacy attitude Mr President and no need to waste any more money on yet another futule commission of enquiry which will just end up in file 13

emmanuel mampuru 5/19/2008 4:42:50 PM
It started as xenophobic, and down the line it will be ethnics attacks, just watch and see!!

Brenton 5/19/2008 4:43:38 PM
This is a national crisis and it is time for our politicians to stop paying lip service to the problem and actually do something about it. It is time for the Army to be deployed and Marshal Law to implemented in the Townships. It is already to late for the 23 victims who died but others can be saved. They have now also started turning on Shangaan speaking South Africans.

Unhappy 5/19/2008 4:44:10 PM
They will not (probably do not know how to) organise border controls according to international standards so now SA is faced with yet another ANC induced crisis. Or are they saying it isn't a crisis again? AIDS, Crime, Illegal Immigrants, Unemployment, Zimbabwe Policy, Murders , Rape - we are world leaders in most if not all these fields. And they want to wait another year before trying to change the appalling country management? Interesting people these ANC guys and dolls.

Shawn 5/19/2008 4:55:07 PM
If I have the choice of employing a South African or a Zimbabwean I will take the Zimbabwean. They are willing to work and are far less lazy than our local Useless Blacks. I say move the locals out and import some more foreigners...

Jono 5/19/2008 4:58:06 PM
We have an army, surely this is the time to use it! Thabo, get them in there now!

Anonymous 5/19/2008 4:59:05 PM
Unfortunately the government can't force people out of the Stone Age where this sort of behaviour belongs. Most of these immigrants aren't here illegally, a large portion of them have university degrees and an entrepreneurial spirit that sees them profit where those that expect handouts fail.

Noni 5/19/2008 5:01:20 PM
Honestly, government needs to do something before the situation turns to genocide, if it hasn't already. What kind of people are South Africans turning into - burning people, chopping people up? Its beyond barbaric and savage behaviour.

Martin 5/19/2008 5:02:21 PM
Zuma/Mbeki ---psss Go to Botswana and see who they deal with this little problem-put them in camps(DUKWI)until their problems are over and send them back afterwards-nice solution.

Joe 5/19/2008 5:03:05 PM
The majotr cause of the Xenophobic attacks are a general collapse of law and order in South Africa as a whole - Mbeki has created the collapse of the police force by protecting Selebi and the Minister of Justice who are not up to maintaining law and order. Criminals do crime because they know the police are ineffective and there is a 90 percent chance of getting away with robbery, rape, murder and fraud and corruption. Even the corrupt MP's and MEC's are protected by government.

mabitsela 5/19/2008 5:06:42 PM
This issue was raised by opposition parties long ago.Because the ANC thought DA sought to merely oppose it, went on to ingore the issue.Who is a normal South African to work 5 days a week and earn R300?What can you do with this pittance?Finish it on transport money like from Diepsloot to JHB City or better stay in Alex and walk to Sandton?

Frank II 5/19/2008 5:10:11 PM
There is no crises...not here, not there, nowhere!

farai 5/19/2008 5:14:56 PM
