Durban - A police officer was wounded in the shoulder at Inanda, Kwazulu-Natal, on Wednesday when a taxi passenger fired a shot at him, Durban North police spokesperson Captain Gugu Sabela said on Thursday.
Sabela said the officer was patrolling in Inanda when he spotted a taxi parked on the wrong side of the road.
When he approached the taxi the driver apologised.
However, at that point, Sabela said, a passenger jumped out of the vehicle and fired a gun at the officer.
He was shot in the shoulder and taken to Mount Edgecombe Hospital, where he was in a stable condition.
Sabela said the gunman ran away and no arrests had been made.
Police investigators were mystified why the passenger had suddenly opened fire on the officer.
