Bisho - The Eastern Cape's education department suspended two employees with immediate effect on Wednesday after an internal departmental audit team found they had defrauded the department of thousands of rands.
Department spokesperson Danie Breytenbach said one of the employees, an order clerk at the Steve Tshwete Education Complex, allegedly falsified information on an order to the value of R650 000.
The other employee, a Port Elizabeth teacher, allegedly obtained two six-month contracts from the Nelson Mandela Metropole and then proceeded to work for the municipality while still in employ of the department.
Breytenbach said he got a doctor to book him off work for the duration of his contract at the Port Elizabeth Metropole.
The two employees will, in the next few weeks, face internal disciplinary hearings the results of which will be passed on to the Scorpions for criminal prosecution.
