Welkom - Four would-be robbers will appear in the Virginia magistrate's court on Tuesday after they attempted to break into a farm house in the Virginia district, Free State police said.
Inspector Stephen Thakeng said Cloete Saayman, 54, and his wife were in the house at about midday on Sunday when they heard someone trying to get in.
Saayman went to investigate and found four men - one of them armed with a large knife - already in the house.
He managed to get hold of his firearm and fired a shot, but missed.
Saayman forced the four men into a room at gunpoint before calling police. However, three of them had escaped by the time police arrived.
The three suspects were later arrested.
No one was injured.
