3 Gauteng hospitals renamed

2008-09-29 12:38

Johannesburg - Three Gauteng hospitals were renamed on Monday to honour individuals who made a significant contribution to the country's development, Health MEC Brian Hlongwa said in Johannesburg.

"Names have meaning and symbolic values. Public spaces and even private buildings are given names to celebrate the achievements of people, or to honour the legacies they have left behind for communities," he said.

The Pretoria Academic Hospital was renamed the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

The Coronation Hospital in Johannesburg would become the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.

Johannesburg General Hospital was renamed the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital.

Exhaustive process

Hlongwa said a lengthy and exhaustive process had been followed since August 2007 to enable the name changes. He spoke of changes allowing a clean break with a past that "no right-minded person can be proud of".

He said the process to select the new names was not a-historical and the three names selected were from three eras in South African politics.

Charlotte Maxeke was selected to characterise the early 20th century, which saw the rise of resistance movements, including the ANC.

Rahima Moosa was selected to represent the 1950s when she took part in the passive resistance movement, and was one of the four women who led the 1956 women's march to the Union Buildings.

Steve Biko was selected to represent the 1970s which saw the Soweto uprising. Hlongwa described it as a time "when the internal resistance against the [apartheid] regime gained overwhelming popular support and international recognition".

The changes would be official as of Monday, he said.

Hlongwa said the name changes would enable people to identify with the institutions that they used, as well as honouring prominent figures in South Africa's history.

Public participation

The Gauteng Democratic Alliance however said that their objections to the name changes had been brushed aside.

"There really should have been more public participation in the naming of these hospitals. Public hearings should have been held at the hospitals, instead of a closed process by a panel appointed by the department," said DA health spokesperson Jack Bloom.

The department should rather have considered the names for new hospitals being built in Vosloorus and Jabulani as well as the hospitals that had been planned for Diepsloot, Daveyton, Kruisfontein and Lenasia, Bloom said.

hospitals are dirty smelling of urine and the gardens are so neglected instead of buying linen and pyjamas for patients Brian decides to change name for what? anyway these names suit the filth and neglect in our public hospitals

Figjam 9/29/2008 1:01:06 PM
Is there absolutely nothing better to spend money on than renaming hospitals that people still refer to be their previous names??? How stupid. . .

Olivia 9/29/2008 1:06:34 PM
the point of this renaming is? Did the service improve at this hospitals

Nick 9/29/2008 1:10:47 PM
Eish, what a total waste of money. These mamparas could not organise a beer party in a brewery!

Herman 9/29/2008 1:13:44 PM
Why does the goverment not just rename every damn street, hospital, airport etc. and get it over with once and for all.we all know thats what will happen anyway.then they can find something else to waste money on.

service delivery, next time the anc die hards here will argue that the anc has opened new hospitals (as a result of this name change), one has to admire the anc for its wicked sense of humour:-), must say am passed being pissed off with them, they're a joke, even George Bush the clumsy couldn't provide us with so much laughter, its like watching a comedy series, they're trying to outdo one another on stupidity stakes, oh well../ laugh the beloved country:-)

what a load of crap, do they know how much of money is wasted just printing new stationery. They could use this to buy paint, linen, increase salaries, etc But no ANC no!!! does the new president know about this? and who r these people...I vaguely know about steve bhiko

cr@p institutions on our GPS's by mistake now...

"Yes let's see if the name changes will improve the service" From bad to worse. A name meens nothing at all why not change all old names to new afrivan names. Go ahead it will not change a thing.

ANOTHER building/street named after Steve Biko, come on how many more places do you want to name after an ANC old boy. We see Albert Luthuli everywhere as it is. There is a hospital, convention centre, highway, several buildings named after Albert, my word are those the only South Africans that made a difference? It's an ANC world out there and we not it....

Jacques 9/29/2008 1:44:58 PM
Another name change, oh well... I will just sit back and see how a name change will help a hospital. I actually think that we should rename all the hospitals to someone in the Carte Blanch studios. They are the only people doing something to help hospitals or maybe those who contributed money.
