Welkom - Police found 1790kg of gold dust and a large amount of related equipment when they raided two hostels in the Northern Free State, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Captain Rosa Benade said the police launched Operation Phakoe at 7am on Wednesday and completed the exercise four hours later. They concentrated efforts on the "notorious G-Hostel" and the neighbouring Moeletsi Hostel which are close to Welkom.
She said police confiscated 1790kg of gold dust, 17 smelting torches, 57 grinders, 1kg of borax, 14 gas bottles, 94 buckets for sorting gold dust and 103 corrugated iron plates.
One man was arrested for possession of gold dust, while six others were arrested on suspicion of being in the country illegally.
Benade said the local commando, mine security personnel and the police dog unit assisted in the raid.
