Durban - The Education Department is calling on all who failed matric last year to register for tuition in failed subjects, in order to be entered for the examinations in June.
Of the 148 093 people who wrote last year, 53 672 failed.
The tuition programme, which is in line with a national policy, will consist of Saturday and March vacation classes.
Department spokesperson Ntokozo Maphisa said every effort will be made to cluster learners in venues, such as schools, education centres or community halls, which are close to them.
However, he said learners are encouraged to register in districts, circuits and wards where they did grade 12 in 2007.
Registration is from this coming Tuesday until January 25, and learners are expected to bring along statements of last year's results, he said.
"We really encourage prompt registration. It will assist us to identify venues for tuition and register examination centres."
He said this will also help them deliver learner support material in time for classes to begin in February.
The department will offer support for English second language; biology; physical science; mathematics; history; geography; accounting; economics; business economics; agricultural science; travel and tourism.
"We have professional staff such as educators, subject advisors and other departmental officials, who will be available to provide the tuition, support and monitoring - we'll also provide stationery, study guides, past exam papers, set works and any other extra tutorial material."
Saturday classes will run from 08:00 until 14:30, while the March holiday classes will run from Monday to Friday, 08:30 until 15:00.
