Johannesburg - Gauteng police launched a manhunt after a police officer was shot dead in Jeppe on Wednesday, police said.
Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said police were looking for three men who killed an officer and helped a man escape from a police van at about 09:00.
Two officers were transporting a man they arrested earlier for carrying a AK47 when their car was stopped by a hail of bullets, said spokesman Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini.
"The men who were driving an Audi came from behind the police van, shooting. When the van stopped they disarmed both officers, released the other man and the four of them sped off in the car," said Dlamini.
The officer who was driving the van died on the scene and the other officer was not injured.
Police were investigating a case of murder.
