Cops want to grab fast wheels

Johannesburg - The owner of a Lamborghini that was trapped doing 251km/h on the N14 on Sunday could lose his glittering yellow super-luxury sports car - if the metro police get their way.

He is not the only one.

The metro police are going to ask the asset forfeiture unit to seize and sell the Lamborghini and eight other vehicles that were clocked at high speeds at the weekend.

The drivers were all out on bail and were due to appear on court on Monday.

All nine motorists were trapped doing speeds of more than 184km/h on Johannesburg highways.

High Court ruling

Inspector Edna Mamonyane of Johannesburg metro police said they would ask that the Lamborghini, a Porsche, three BMWs, a Peugeot, an Audi, a Volkswagen Jetta and a Nissan Sentra should be confiscated and sold.

The High Court in Bloemfontein recently ruled that traffic departments could seize and sell the vehicles of serious traffic offenders.

Mamonyane said: "The legal process will have to be followed before that can be done, but we are definitely going to put forward that request."

She said if the vehicles were sold any amounts owing on them would be settled, and the remainder possibly would be paid into metro police coffers.

The motorists were all charged with reckless and negligent driving and they were due to appear in Mondeor and Muldersdrift courts on Monday.

Mamonyane said the driver of the Lamborghini, a man in his late 40s, was trapped on the N14 near the Jukskei off-ramp.

"He was very calm and praised the officers for the way they treated him," she said.

All three BMWs were trapped at the Klip River off-ramp on the N14, at speeds in excess of 200km/h.

The Porsche driver was trapped at 186km/h, also at the Juksei off-ramp, while the Jetta was doing 186km/h and the Audi and Peugeot were both trapped at 184km/h, at the same spot as the BMWs.

The Nissan Sentra was clocked at 195km/h on the N1.

Want same for drunken drivers

The offenders' vehicles were returned to them after they were released, but, according to Mamonyane, the vehicles would be seized as soon as the court approved the order to seize and sell.

Mamonyane said the traffic department would not only apply for the vehicles of speedsters to be declared forfeit, but also those of drunken drivers.

It always amazes me how the only time issues are given focus in this country is when there is financial gain. When the metro police started clamping down and confiscating taxis that had outstanding fines they quickly backed sown after demonstrations in JHB. When a traffic light's not working I never see the metro police doing anything about it. It seems the idea of actually serving the community has dissapeared. It is now run as a business, if it doesn't generate revenue it's not important.

Kajol Patel 12/4/2006 7:27:51 AM
Will they actually sell the Lamborghini or will the current chief of police be driving it around?

Joe 12/4/2006 7:31:19 AM
It is now a new "fashion" to grab traffic offender vehicles caught in a road block or speed trap. I don't say that is wrong. They must just be consistent and grab all offending taxis that cause 90% of accidents too.

Brian Eckersley 12/4/2006 7:32:16 AM
Any one of those vehicles travelling at 200 km/h is much safer than a derelict minibus taxi overloaded travelling over 140 km/h which they often do. Get real please. This is just another scam for high ranking officials to drive around with the publics confiscated vehicles.

The Metro cops now want to take away fast wheels... what about vehicles that are NOT roadworthy?? I was at an accident scene yesterdag and NOTHING was done about the guy who was on something kind of booze or drugs and had caused the accident. His delapidated bakkie with an 3 year expired license and his drivers license was expired in 2004, was allowed to take his car and go.... the police did NOTHING to take the bakkie and the Metro police did not even take the time to show up..Priorities..

Marius 12/4/2006 7:59:35 AM
You know it is bad when the metro poloice dept cant afford to buy fast cars and instead have to 'buy' it from offenders.

Ari 12/4/2006 8:06:09 AM
This is the worst thing I've ever heard. We buy fast cars to drive fast. If the police want to take our cars, they should ban fast cars from entering the country.

this should be an eye opener for the rest of speedsters out there, you not just endangering your own life but many other innocent lives on the road. As for the metro department, you doing an excellent job but!!!!!!! this should not only be for the festive season, it should be daily routine

How about we start at the root of the problem on the road, the Taxi's. Once the traffic department take action against Taxi's breaking every single law every day constantly then they can start with people who once a lifetime break the law. Every day to work I see taxi's driving over red robots, stop streets, ect. Some off them do this while traffic officers sit there and do nothing to them. How many Taxi's drive in the fast lane of a highway? Taxi - 100Km limit, fastlane - 120km. Wake up!

Frank 12/4/2006 8:26:06 AM
The principle behind the removal of vehicles that transgress the Road Traffic laws is acceptable, provided the application is universal and totally objective. Consider our DG in his SLK who was "quietly" fined R10 000 for his transgression. Sounds like a slight tap on the wrist! Will his vehicle remain at risk, will he escape further sanction, or will the best legal representation or political connection determine the outcome?

WGS 12/4/2006 8:30:59 AM
Just a comment. Last weekend a high profile politician was trapped at Grassmere in his Merc AMG. "Arrested" without handcufs, tried to climb out a window to avoid the press. Monday paid a R 10 000, fine in the court after press was mislead as to where his apprearance will be. No comment on "grabbing" his car..... Double standards are a norm. Hope those drivers attorneys are aware of this and who else might be needing this. Don't get me wrong, you break the law, you must face the law.

Frans van Vuuren 12/4/2006 8:41:34 AM
Tip to all the speed freaks: Remove the numberplates before taking off. The fine for driving around without a number plate is much less. I know, I had superbike (ZX10)..........

Will 12/4/2006 8:54:35 AM
I would say this may well be a case of discrimination against the wealthier members of society... the porsche owner stands to lose a vehicle worth perhaps a million or two while the more dangerous nissan sentra owner stands to lose perhaps 100k. It's a bit like getting a heftier fine for talking on a fancier phone while driving!! While speeding may cause death, perhaps there are other, more productive, avenues Metropol could pursue. After all, South Africa's bad reputation isn't for fast driving!
