Johannesburg - A taxi driver fled from the scene of an accident after his taxi overturned and seriously injured nine people on Sunday, Eastern Cape police said.
Spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the taxi overturned after it failed to negotiate a curve on the N2 between Dutywa and Butterworth near Qhora village.
Nine passengers were injured and rushed to Butterworth hospital in a critical condition.
He said according to some of the passengers the driver was drinking alcohol whilst driving the taxi.
At the scene of the accident police found liquor bottles.
Manatha said Dutywa police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving. The taxi was travelling from Mthatha to Butterworth.
