Johannesburg - A 17-year-old boy was shot dead on Sunday during a hijacking in Olifantsfontein on the East Rand, said police on Monday.
The boy's mother, who was driving, stopped on the side of the road and asked two men for directions to a petrol station as she did not know the area, said police spokesperson Kwena Makgoba.
"The woman allowed the men to get into her car to direct her. Once in the vehicle, the men took out firearms and told the woman to stop the car."
Makgoba said that when her son refused to get out of the car, the hijackers shot and killed him.
The men abandoned the car a few kilometres down the road as it had run out of petrol.
No arrests have been made. The investigation continues.
