Cape Town - A man drowned after a rubber duck capsized in choppy seas near Gansbaai on Friday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
NSRI Hermanus deputy station commander Ian Alton said the body of a 39-year-old man and eight survivors were found washed up on the beach.
The rubber duck capsized roughly half a nautical mile off-shore between Gansbaai and Die Damme.
"It is suspected that the man drowned. The remaining eight survivors were released on-scene requiring no medical assistance."
"According to the men their boat was capsized by a wave in the confused sea state with a choppy one metre swell with 15 knot winds."
The eight survivors were wearing wetsuits and the dead man was wearing a T-shirt and jeans, he said.
