Drivers given licence breather

Johannesburg - The Automobile Association has welcomed changes to the National Road Traffic Act which will allow people who have been out of the country to convert their driver's licences to the new credit-card licence.
The AA's Gary Ronald said people who had been working abroad on contract or studying full time at foreign institutions could now convert to the new driver's licence card.
The amended legislation allowed for the conversion of old licences within a six-month period from the date of return to South Africa.
However, drivers would have to go through another test to obtain the credit-card licence.
He urged drivers to apply for a temporary driver's licence at the same time as the application for conversion.
