Mthatha - A convicted prisoner who had an outstanding murder case was found murdered on the side of the R61 near Boons in the Ngqeleni area on Tuesday morning, Eastern Cape police said.
The 30-year-old, who was supposed to be behind bars, was found with bullet wounds in his upper body, said Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela.
"We don't know how he got out because he was supposed to be in prison in Port St Johns, so we are now consulting with prison officials to find out what happened," said Fatyela.
Thirty-five spent cartridges of a 9mm pistol were found around the man's body.
The man, originally from Mxhaso village in Lusikisiki, also had an outstanding case of escaping from lawful custody.
