Mthatha - Three armed men robbed the Mthatha airport in the Eastern Cape on Sunday, police said.
Spokesperson Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the three went into the airport at 02:00.
They held security guards at gunpoint, demanded keys to the safe and stole four revolvers and 52 rounds of ammunition.
They left without firing a shot.
It was believed a getaway car was parked near the airport because their footprints were only visible for about 150m, police said.
No arrests have been made and police have opened a case of armed robbery.
