Cape Town - Gun-wielding robbers killed a bystander after holding up a chain store and hijacking two cars in Lakeside near Muizenberg, Western Cape police said on Friday.
Inspector Bernadine Steyn said Gordon Louw, 59, of Kalk Bay was shot in the chest on Thursday evening.
Eight occupants in a bakkie stopped outside the shop, before alighting and entering the store. The armed men ordered cashiers to hand over money and removed computer equipment and a fax machine.
They hijacked two Toyota Corollas in the parking lot. Several shots were fired with assault rifles, one hitting Louw. No one else was wounded. Louw died at the scene, said Steyn in a statement.
The gang made their getaway in the two cars and their bakkie and were still at large.
One of the Toyotas was later found shortly afterwards in a Westlake street. Police were investigating a case of murder, armed robbery and hijacking.
