Pretoria - Captain Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala has become the first woman to be appointed an admiral in the South African Navy.
She takes up her new post on January 1 next year, the navy said in a statement in Pretoria.
Litchfield-Tshabalala joined the navy in April 1997 as a communications officer based in Simon's Town in the Western Cape.
Her next deployment was to the directorate of human resources at the navy's office in Pretoria.
In her new post, she will serve as director of fleet human resources in Simon's Town with the rank of Rear-Admiral junior grade.
"This is yet another example of women being appointed to key positions throughout the SA Navy, both ashore and at sea," said the navy.
