IEC to give registration figures

Johannesburg - The Independent Electoral Commission hopes to know by Wednesday how many people turned up for its first registration drive at the weekend, spokesperson Lydia Young said on Monday.
"There's no news yet, we should be giving out a final statement on Wednesday, said Young.
The special voter registration weekends are held to allow people to place their names on the voters' roll in the area that they live, or to check whether their details are still correct.
To register for the first time, or to re-register in a new voting district after a move, voters could go to the over 19 000 sites set up for this around the country.
Checking registration details such as where you must vote can be done online on www.elections.org.za, by phone on 0800-11800; or by SMS to 32810.
Voters who missed this weekend's drive can still register at their local municipal electoral officer, usually at a civic centre.
Not all the addresses for the municipal electoral officers are listed on the website.
A test call to a call centre showed that these centres provided the same details as on the website - and as the address for the officer in Sedibeng, for example, was not available on the website, it was not available to the call centre operator.
A telephone number was provided, but the line was not answered.
The IEC will have another voter registration drive, to be announced soon.
Just over 20 million people are currently on the voters' roll.
